Project name:

Musical Instruments of Nagaland:
Documenting Indigenous Sound Practices
and Visual Cultures

By Aditya Shrivastava, mentored by Dr Manjiri Thakoor.

Methodology

This documentation paper follows a qualitative and ethnographic research approach, combining field research with secondary and visual analysis. The study prioritizes observation, cultural context, and material understanding over technical musical notation. The research treats musical instruments as living cultural objects, shaped by ecology, belief systems, and social practices rather than isolated sound-producing devices.

“The Wari Art Research grant gave me the resources and confidence to approach this fading practise with ease. I’m delighted to have worked with Dr Thakoor. There is so much to learn from these indigenous practises. I hope you enjoy the project.”

Dr. Manjiri Thakoor

“It was a delight to work with Aditya, he has shown rare rigour and documented something otherwise hard to document. I am glad I could mentor him.”
